A Modular Microsoft Smartwatch May Be In The Pipeline

A patent published last month by the United States Patent and Trademark Office reveals that Microsoft may be working on a new modular smartwatch.

Discovered by Patently Mobile, the presentation shows a clock with all the features typical of a "standard" smartwatch, but with the ability to fit into the modules to release additional functionality. This is similar to Apple's work on developing smart bands that add additional features to their smartwatch. Some even think we can see this debuted with the upcoming Apple Watch Series 3.

The images that accompany the Microsoft application show a Windows user interface and a smartwatch with a band consisting of a series of modular segments. Additional modules could be fitted and increase the battery life, add additional sensors or memory.

There is also the possibility that the smartwatch could be a smartphone, which would probably mean built-in cellular connectivity and a microphone. Microsoft points out that in addition to a bracelet, it is also considering a necklace-like device.

It's been about two years since the tech giant revealed the band 2, its last usable. In a change of direction, the company has said that it has no immediate plans to launch a third-generation tracker. Hopefully this latest presentation will lead to another change of heart from Microsoft.
